SHE ONLY DID HER CLASSMATES’ HOMEWORK FOR MONEY—UNTIL ONE LOVE LETTER CHANGED EVERYTHING
Chapter 9
As graduation approached, Mia received an offer from a prestigious publishing company.
It was everything she had worked for.
Good salary.
Excellent position.
Career advancement.
But the company was in another city.
Jason was accepted into a graduate program near Westbridge.
Their futures were suddenly moving in different directions.
Mia became anxious.
She didn’t tell Jason.
Instead, she started pulling away.
He noticed.
“You’re doing it again.”
“Doing what?”
“Running.”
Mia looked away.
“I got a job offer.”
Jason smiled.
“That’s amazing.”
“In another city.”
He paused.
“When?”
“After graduation.”
Jason nodded.
“Congratulations.”
Mia expected anger.
Instead, he smiled.
“Why aren’t you upset?”
“Because it’s your dream.”
“But what about us?”
“We’ll figure it out.”
“You’re not afraid?”
“Of course I am.”
Mia stared at him.
“Then why aren’t you saying anything?”
“Because I don’t want you to give up your future for me.”
Mia’s eyes filled with tears.
“I thought you’d ask me to stay.”
Jason shook his head.
“I love you.”
He took her hand.
“And because I love you, I want you to become everything you can be.”
Mia cried.
She had spent years believing love meant possession.
Now she understood.
Love could also mean letting someone grow.
They decided to try long distance.
It wasn’t easy.
There were missed calls.
Arguments.
Lonely nights.
Different schedules.
But they stayed.
Mia learned to communicate.
Jason learned patience.
They visited when they could.
They sent letters.
Real letters.
Not assignments.
Not fake confessions.
Their own words.
One night, Mia received one from Jason.
She opened it slowly.
I used to think the best thing you ever did for me was write that letter.
I was wrong.
The best thing you ever did was teach me that feelings don’t have to be perfect to be real.
Mia smiled.
Then she wrote back.
The best thing you ever did for me was convince me that being understood is worth the risk of being seen.
She mailed it the next morning.
Months passed.
Their relationship survived.
Not because it was effortless.
Because both of them chose it.
