By the end of the afternoon, Michael looked completely different.
Jessica stepped back.
“Much better.”
Michael looked at himself in the mirror.
“You’ve transformed me.”
“Don’t get used to it.”
“I might.”
They laughed.
For a moment, neither spoke.
They were standing close.
Too close.
Jessica looked into his eyes.
Michael looked back.
Something shifted.
Neither moved.
Then Jessica’s phone rang.
She jumped.
It was Cody.
“Hello?”
Michael stepped away.
Jessica answered.
Cody wanted to see her that evening.
She agreed.
On the way home, Jessica felt strangely guilty.
She didn’t understand why.
Cody was her boyfriend.
Michael was her boss.
There was no reason to feel anything else.
Yet all evening, she kept thinking about Michael.
The next morning, she arrived at work to discover that Michael had left a coffee on her desk.
No note.
Nothing else.
Just coffee.
Jessica smiled despite herself.
Then she remembered her assignment.
She opened her notebook.
The list stared back.
Handsome.
Successful.
Intelligent.
Polite.
Adventurous.
She stared at the words.
For the first time, they seemed strangely childish.
Later that day, she left her laptop open while rushing to the printing room.
Michael walked past her desk.
A document on the screen caught his attention.
He stopped.
He read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
His expression changed.
The title was:
“How to Find the Perfect Man in a World Full of Pretenders.”
Michael kept reading.
Then he saw his company mentioned.
He saw Jack’s name.
And he saw details that made his stomach tighten.
Jessica hadn’t simply lied about her resume.
She had been investigating the men around her.
Including him.
