Three years after the first meeting, Richard Cole made one final attempt.
He offered Claire an enormous amount for the diner.

“What do you want?”
“I don’t know.”

“That’s what Henry says.”

“Then maybe he’s right.”

Henry was in booth seven.

“How was the offer?”
“How did you know?”
“Sophie told me.”
Claire sat.
“It was huge.”
“Yes.”
“I could walk away.”
“You could.”
“What would you do?”
Henry thought.
“I’d ask whether you’re tired of the diner or tired of being responsible for everything.”
Claire became quiet.
“Tired of everything.”
“Then don’t sell.”
She looked at him.
“What if I want a different life?”
“Then build one.”
“Can I?”
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“You don’t have to destroy this life to create another.”
That changed her thinking.
Claire didn’t sell.
Instead, she hired a manager.
Reduced her hours.
Returned to architecture school full-time.
The diner remained.
It became a family-run business.
Claire designed the theater.
Then renovated two other historic buildings.
She discovered a new career.
Preservation architecture.
She began restoring old downtown properties.
