Henry’s health began declining.
He hid it.
Claire noticed.
“You look tired.”
He laughed.
“Again?”
“More than usual.”
“I’m seventy-seven.”
“You’ve used that excuse before.”
He smiled.
“Maybe.”
She insisted he see a doctor.
He did.
Heart disease.
Nothing immediately catastrophic.
But he needed rest.
For the first time, Henry couldn’t simply work through a problem.
Sophie became concerned.
Claire stepped in.
She took over some foundation duties.
Henry hated it.
“You don’t work for me.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
“Because you’re my friend.”
He smiled.
“That’s dangerous.”
She laughed.
“Very.”
Henry went home.
The town continued without him.
That was the point.
He had built systems that didn’t require him.
Claire ran the cooperative.
Sophie ran the foundation.
Local owners managed their businesses.
Henry finally understood what success meant.
Not being needed.
Building something that could survive without you.
He told Claire:
“I think I’ve finally done it.”
“Done what?”
“Built something that doesn’t belong to me.”
She smiled.
“That’s very you.”
He nodded.
Then added:
“I’ve wasted a lot of time.”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because you used it to learn.”
Henry smiled.
“You sound like my wife.”
“Good.”
