She Hired a Drifter to Repair Her Broken Barn — Then Offered Him the One Home He Had Spent Years Running From
Chapter 11
Eli eventually proposed.
He chose the barn.
He had rebuilt every major part of it.
Now he stood beneath the original beams holding a small ring.
Maggie entered.
“What are you doing?”
“Waiting.”
“For?”
“You.”
She smiled.
“That sounds dangerous.”
He laughed.
Then became serious.
“When I came here, I didn’t have a home.”
Maggie listened.
“I thought I wanted money.”
“I thought I wanted to stay anonymous.”
“I thought leaving was the only way to avoid getting hurt.”
He took her hand.
“Then you hired me to fix a barn.”
She laughed through her tears.
“I thought you needed the money.”
“I did.”
He knelt.
“But I needed something else more.”
“What?”
“You.”
She covered her mouth.
“Maggie Lawson, will you marry me?”
She smiled.
“Yes.”
He stood.
She kissed him.
The barn lights glowed around them.
For a man who had spent years running, standing still had never felt so right.
The wedding took place in the same barn.
Her children stood beside her.
His brother came.
His father cried.
Maggie wore a simple dress.
Eli wore a dark suit.
There were no extravagant decorations.
Just flowers from the ranch.
Wooden tables.
Warm lights.
Family.
During the vows, Eli said:
“I spent years believing a home was a place.”
He looked at Maggie.
“It isn’t.”
“It’s a person who makes you want to stay.”
Maggie cried.
Then laughed.
“I spent years believing taking care of people meant fixing everything for them.”
She looked at him.
“Then I learned that sometimes love means giving someone a place where they can fix themselves.”
Everyone applauded.
The ceremony ended under the stars.
