She Hired a Drifter to Repair Her Broken Barn — Then Offered Him the One Home He Had Spent Years Running From

Chapter 7

Eli stayed.

Not because of the job.

Because of Maggie.

He didn’t say it.

She didn’t ask.

But both knew.

The barn was nearly finished.

The final task was restoring the old wooden doors.

Maggie stood nearby.

“You’ve done amazing work.”

He smiled.

“Your grandfather built it well.”

“Would he have liked you?”

“Probably not.”

“Why?”

“I don’t trust easily.”

“He didn’t either.”

Eli laughed.

“Then we’d get along.”

She looked at him.

“You should stay after the barn is finished.”

“I’ve been thinking about it.”

“And?”

“I’m scared.”

“Of what?”

“Becoming comfortable.”

Maggie smiled.

“That’s not a bad thing.”

“It is when you’re used to leaving.”

She stepped closer.

“Then leave less.”

He looked at her.

“You’re making it sound easy.”

“It isn’t.”

She paused.

“But neither is being lonely.”

He stared at her.

She knew.

He knew.

Neither moved.

Then Maggie kissed him.

It was brief.

Gentle.

Almost hesitant.

When she stepped back, Eli looked stunned.

“What was that?”

“Something you were too scared to do.”

He laughed softly.

“I was going to.”

“When?”

“Eventually.”

“You’re terrible at timing.”

They smiled.

Their relationship began without rules.

No promises.

No expectations.

Just evenings on the porch.

Morning coffee.

Work in the barn.

Small conversations.

Eli introduced her to his brother through a video call.

The conversation lasted twenty minutes.

His brother cried.

Eli did too.

Maggie pretended not to notice.

Afterward, Eli sat outside.

“I forgot what his voice sounded like.”

Maggie sat beside him.

“You needed to hear it.”

He nodded.

“Maybe.”

Then he asked:

“Would you ever leave?”

She looked at him.

“The ranch?”

“Me.”

Maggie smiled.

“I don’t make promises lightly.”

“That’s not an answer.”

She leaned against him.

“It’s the closest one you’re getting.”

He laughed.

For the first time, his future looked like something he wanted instead of something he feared.
