She Fell in Love With a Worker — Unaware He Was the Millionaire Architect and Owner!

Chapter 3

A week later, Emma began looking forward to seeing Daniel.

She told herself it was because he was useful.

That was all.

He could read blueprints.

He understood construction.

He never complained.

He even fixed things other workers ignored.

But there were other reasons.

He remembered how she took her coffee.

He knew which days she had the late community meetings.

He always saved her a seat at lunch.

And somehow, without trying, he made the long days easier.

One Friday afternoon, a storm hit the city.

Rain came down so hard that half the construction site flooded.

Emma rushed inside the temporary office.

Daniel was already there.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Your folder?”

She looked down.

Her documents were soaked.

“Oh no.”

Daniel took them.

“Give me that.”

“What are you doing?”

“Saving them.”

He spread the papers across a table.

Then pulled out his phone.

“There was a backup printer in the storage trailer.”

“You’re carrying paper through this rain?”

“I’ve done worse.”

Emma smiled.

“You really do everything.”

He looked at her.

“Maybe.”

They spent the next hour drying documents.

At some point, Emma laughed.

Daniel looked up.

“What?”

“You have ink on your face.”

“Where?”

She reached up and wiped it from his cheek.

Her fingers stopped.

So did his.

For a second, neither moved.

The storm pounded against the roof.

The room suddenly felt very small.

Emma pulled her hand back.

“Sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

She looked away.

“I’m hungry.”

“That’s convenient.”

“Why?”

“I know a place.”

They ended up at a tiny diner two blocks away.

Emma was surprised.

“You eat here?”

“Sometimes.”

“You seem like you’d eat somewhere expensive.”

He smiled.

“What does expensive taste like?”

“I don’t know.”

“Neither do I.”

It was a lie.

But Emma didn’t know that.

They talked for almost two hours.

She told him about growing up with her father.

He told her about learning to draw buildings from his grandfather.

She asked why he never became an architect.

He said,

“I did.”

She blinked.

“You did?”

“I mean, I wanted to.”

“Then why not?”

He shrugged.

“Life got complicated.”

She nodded.

“So did mine.”

The conversation felt strangely easy.

Then Emma asked,

“Do you have anyone?”

Daniel looked at her.

“No.”

“Girlfriend?”

“No.”

“Wife?”

“No.”

“Children?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She froze.

Daniel smiled.

“Good?”

“I mean…”

She looked embarrassed.

“I don’t know why I said that.”

He leaned back.

“I liked it.”

She stared.

“You’re impossible.”

“I’ve been told.”

They laughed.

When Daniel drove her home, he parked across the street.

Emma looked at him.

“Thank you.”

“For dinner?”

“For today.”

He nodded.

She opened the door.

“Goodnight, Daniel.”

“Goodnight, Emma.”

She stepped out.

Then leaned back inside.

“Don’t disappear.”

His smile faded slightly.

“I won’t.”

She closed the door.

Daniel watched her walk inside.

Then he looked at his phone.

Three missed calls from his executive assistant.

Two from his CFO.

One from the board.

He ignored all of them.

Because for the first time in years, he wanted to stay exactly where he was.

The next morning, his assistant sent him an urgent message.

We have a serious problem. The Eastwood project budget has been altered.

Daniel’s expression changed.

Someone had stolen almost three million dollars from the redevelopment budget.

And someone inside his company was trying to make it look like the community project had caused the loss.
