Ethan found her outside the school later.
“You shouldn’t be alone.”
“I want to go home.”
“Okay.”
They walked in silence.
Lily finally said:
“I knew this would happen.”
“What?”
“That people would laugh if I tried to change.”
“You didn’t change for them.”
“I did.”
“No.”
Ethan stopped.
“You changed because you were tired of hating yourself.”
She looked at him.
“But maybe Madison was right.”
“No.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
“How?”
“Because I knew you before any of them did.”
Lily looked away.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand more than you think.”
She wiped her tears.
“Then tell me.”
Ethan hesitated.
“Not here.”
“Why?”
“Because you deserve to hear it when you’re ready.”
She didn’t understand.
But she went home.
