The spring dance was still two weeks away.
Madison began making comments.
“Wow, Lily. That’s a different look.”
“Thanks.”
“I guess you’re really trying now.”
Lily smiled.
“I’m trying to feel comfortable.”
Madison laughed.
“Whatever works.”
Lily walked away.
For once, the words didn’t hurt.
Ethan had taught her something important.
Not every opinion deserved a place in her mind.
But Madison wasn’t finished.
One afternoon, Lily discovered that someone had posted a picture of her from the cafeteria.
It had been edited.
Her face looked distorted.
The caption read:

Within an hour, hundreds of students had seen it.
Comments appeared.
People laughed.
Lily’s stomach twisted.
She looked at Ethan.
He immediately understood.
“Who posted it?”
“I don’t know.”
Lily’s phone buzzed again.
Another message.
Another joke.
Then another.
She ran to the bathroom.
Locked the door.
And cried.
