The first real surprise came two weeks later.
Lily’s longtime crush, Ryan Mitchell, approached her after class.
“Hey.”
She turned.
“Hi.”
“Are you going to the spring dance?”
“I don’t know.”
He smiled.
“Would you go with me?”
Lily stared at him.
For a moment, she couldn’t speak.
“Me?”
Ryan laughed.
“Yes. You.”
She smiled.
“Sure.”
When she told Ethan, he was helping her carry books.
“Ryan asked me to the dance.”
Ethan stopped walking.
“He did?”
“Yes.”
“Are you happy?”
“Very.”
Ethan smiled.
“Then I’m happy.”
But Lily noticed something.
His smile didn’t quite reach his eyes.
She ignored it.
She was too excited.
For the first time in years, she felt visible.
Unfortunately, someone else noticed too.
Madison.
She watched Lily from across the hallway.
And for the first time, Madison looked nervous.
