Orphaned and Broke, She Took Over a Deserted Ranch for FREE—What She Found in the Well Changed Everything

Chapter 7

The geological survey took three weeks.

Researchers drilled carefully.

They discovered a deep mineral layer.

Not oil.

Not natural gas.

Something more unusual.

Rare-earth minerals.

The deposits were significant.

Not enough to transform the entire country.

But enough to make the ranch extremely valuable.

Hannah stared at the report.

“So that’s why.”

Helen nodded.

“Possibly.”

“Victor knew?”

“Most likely.”

Hannah looked at the old family map.

The deposits weren’t beneath the whole ranch.

They were directly under the deepest part of the aquifer.

Whoever controlled the water could also control access to the minerals.

It explained everything.

The forged water rights.

The land purchases.

The sabotage.

The pressure.

It all connected.

But Hannah still wanted proof.

She returned to the underground chamber.

She searched every box.

Finally, she found a sealed envelope.

Her father’s handwriting.

For Hannah, if she comes back.

She opened it.

My daughter,

If you are reading this, then I failed to keep you away.

I’m sorry.

The land under Red Willow contains two things.

Water.

And minerals.

Both are valuable.

Neither should belong to one corporation.

I discovered that Thomas had been selling information.

Victor Kane wanted the aquifer.

Others wanted the minerals.

I tried to stop them.

I couldn’t.

So I created the chamber.

Margaret protected it.

If you’re holding this, protect the land.

Not for yourself.

For everyone.

Hannah cried.

Her father had known she’d eventually find this.

Then came the final page.

If I disappear, look for me where the water leaves the mountain.

Hannah showed Helen.

They traced the underground flow.

It emerged at a spring twenty miles away.

Hannah and Roy went there.

They found an old cabin.

Inside was a photograph.

Hannah’s father.

Alive.

Standing with a man Hannah recognized.

Victor Kane.

Another man stood beside them.

Thomas.

Hannah froze.

Her father had once worked with both men.

Maybe the story was more complicated.

Then she found a cassette recorder.

Her father’s voice.

“Thomas wanted money.”

“Victor wanted control.”

“I wanted time.”

A pause.

“Time to protect Hannah.”

The recording continued.

“I made them believe the chamber held nothing valuable.”

“But they never found the true records.”

Hannah held her breath.

“Then who has them?”

Her father answered:

“Margaret.”

A second voice appeared.

Her aunt.

“If Hannah ever finds this, tell her the truth.”

The recording ended.

Hannah stared.

Margaret had known everything.

But why had she left the ranch to Hannah for free?

Helen answered softly.

“Because she trusted you more than anyone else.”

Hannah nodded.

Then footsteps sounded outside the cabin.

Someone was coming.

Roy looked through the window.

“Three cars.”

Hannah’s heart raced.

Victor had found them.

They grabbed the records.

An SUV stopped outside.

Men stepped out.

Hannah and Roy escaped through the back door.

They ran toward the creek.

A vehicle followed.

Then another.

Hannah slipped.

Roy pulled her up.

They reached the horses.

Hannah climbed onto one.

They rode into the trees.

Behind them, someone shouted:

“Don’t let her reach Red Willow!”

Hannah looked back.

They weren’t chasing the minerals.

They were chasing the records.

Because someone had finally realized the real evidence still existed.
