My Wife Said, “Give Me Space. I’ll Reach Out When I’m Ready.” — I Never Waited for Her Again

Chapter 12

One winter evening, I came home late.

Emma was sitting in the kitchen.

The lights were dim.

She looked serious.

“We need to talk.”

My heart immediately tightened.

“What happened?”

She laughed softly.

“Look at your face.”

“Sorry.”

“You still panic.”

“Certain sentences do that.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

She reached across the table.

“I got another offer.”

I waited.

“Europe.”

I blinked.

“How long?”

“Three months.”

I smiled.

“You should go.”

She laughed.

“You didn’t even ask where.”

“Paris?”

“Barcelona.”

“Close enough.”

She smiled.

“You really aren’t going to panic?”

“No.”

“What changed?”

“Everything.”

She squeezed my hand.

“I don’t want to go if it hurts you.”

“It’ll hurt.”

“Then why are you saying yes?”

“Because love isn’t proving you can keep someone close.”

She looked at me.

“What’s it proving?”

“That you trust them enough to let them grow.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“You’ve changed.”

“So have you.”

She leaned across the table.

“Do you remember the day I said I’d reach out when I was ready?”

“Yes.”

“I thought you would wait forever.”

“I almost did.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

She smiled.

“And when I finally came back, you weren’t waiting.”

“No.”

“You were living.”

“Yes.”

“That terrified me.”

“Why?”

“Because I realized you could be happy without me.”

I looked at her.

“You should be happy for that.”

“I am.”

She paused.

“Because now I know you’re with me because you choose me.”

She left for Barcelona a month later.

Three months passed.

Then six.

Her project expanded.

She stayed longer.

We talked every day.

Not because we were afraid.

Because we enjoyed hearing each other’s voices.

When she finally came home, she had another surprise.

She placed a small wooden box in my hand.

“What is it?”

“Open it.”

Inside was a key.

“To what?”

“Our future.”

I laughed.

“That’s annoyingly vague.”

She smiled.

“I’m pregnant.”

I froze.

She started laughing.

“You should see your face.”

“You’re serious?”

She nodded.

For the first time in years, I didn’t feel fear.

I felt something warmer.

Something almost impossible to describe.

I hugged her.

She cried.

Then she whispered:

“I’m ready.”

I pulled back.

“For what?”

“To stop running.”

I kissed her forehead.

“You don’t have to.”

She looked at me.

“I know.”

That was the difference.

She stayed because she wanted to.

Not because she was afraid to leave.

Not because I waited.

Not because someone forced her.

Because she chose us.
