“My Father Sent Me In My Sister’s Place,” She Said… “Get In The Wagon,” Was His Reply
Chapter 13
Winter came.
The ranches survived.
Samuel’s house was rebuilt.
Eliza’s fields produced their first harvest.
Mary—the younger generation’s eldest cousin—came to stay with them.
Children began filling the yards.
For the first time, Samuel’s home no longer felt empty.
One evening, Eliza brought him a small wooden box.
“My mother left this.”
Samuel opened it.
Inside was his father’s old pocket watch.
Samuel’s breath caught.
“Where did she get this?”
“He gave it to her.”
There was a note beneath it.
Samuel unfolded it.
If my son ever learns the truth, tell him I was sorry.
Samuel closed his eyes.
He had spent years believing his father had simply been distant.
Now he understood.
The man had carried guilt until his final day.
Eliza touched his shoulder.
“You don’t have to forgive him tonight.”
Samuel nodded.
“I already did.”
She smiled.
“Why?”
“Because he tried.”
