“My Father Sent Me In My Sister’s Place,” She Said… “Get In The Wagon,” Was His Reply
Chapter 14
The following spring, Samuel asked Eliza to marry him.
There was no grand celebration.
No wealthy guests.
Only family and neighbors.
Eliza wore a simple cream-colored dress.
Samuel wore the best coat he owned.
Margaret cried.
The preacher smiled.
And Samuel’s old ranch hand whispered:
“About time.”
After the ceremony, Eliza stood beside Samuel on the porch.
“You remember the first thing you said to me?”
Samuel smiled.
“Get in the wagon.”
She laughed.
“You sounded terribly serious.”
“I was.”
“I thought you were kidnapping me.”
“I was trying to save you.”
“And now?”
Samuel looked toward the fields.
“Now I’m trying to build something with you.”
Eliza rested her head against his shoulder.
“That’s better.”
Behind them, Margaret called:
“Dinner!”
Samuel looked at Eliza.
“Ready?”
She smiled.
“For what?”
He opened the door.
“Family.”
