Millionaire Dressed Like a Poor Farmer at an Auction — Then He Saw a Widow Selling Her Last Tractor
Chapter 6
Neither of them acted on their feelings.
Sarah had been married.
She still carried grief.
Daniel had spent years avoiding serious relationships.
He was afraid that wealth made people love the life around him rather than the person he was.
Sarah understood that fear.
She had experienced the opposite.
People sometimes treated her differently after learning she was struggling.
But Daniel had treated her like a capable person from the beginning.
That mattered.
One afternoon, Daniel invited Sarah to a company dinner.
She assumed it was business.
Until she arrived and discovered only four people were there.
Daniel.
Sarah.
Emma.
And Daniel’s father.
Sarah recognized him immediately.
Thomas Brooks had once been a farmer.
Now he was seventy-one.
He walked with a cane.
He looked at Sarah and smiled.
“So you’re the woman who made my son interested in farming again.”
Sarah laughed.
“I didn’t know he needed help.”
Thomas nodded.
“He did.”
Daniel sighed.
“Dad.”
Thomas ignored him.
“After my farm failed, Daniel swore he’d never depend on anyone.”
Sarah looked at Daniel.
“That’s not true.”
Thomas laughed.
“He bought a company at twenty-eight because he thought money could protect him.”
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
Sarah understood.
Thomas leaned closer.
“Money protects your property.”
He tapped Daniel’s chest.
“Not that.”
Sarah looked at Daniel.
He said nothing.
Later, after Thomas left, Sarah asked:
“Was your father really that poor?”
Daniel nodded.
“We lost everything.”
“Did you hate him?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“I hated watching him believe he wasn’t worth helping.”
Sarah looked down.
“That’s what I felt.”
“I know.”
They stood outside the restaurant.
Snow began falling.
Daniel reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“What is that?”
“A contract.”
Sarah laughed.
“Of course.”
“Not a business contract.”
She opened it.
Inside was a document transferring ownership of the old tractor to her permanently.
She stared.
“You never actually gave me the title.”
“I wanted to make sure you didn’t sell it.”
“Why?”
“Because someday Emma will ask about her father.”
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“And that tractor will be part of the answer.”
She hugged him.
It was the first time.
Daniel froze.
Then slowly wrapped his arms around her.
Neither moved.
For several seconds, the world disappeared.
When they separated, Sarah whispered:
“Thank you.”
Daniel looked into her eyes.
“You’re welcome.”
Then Emma came running from the restaurant.
“Mom!”
They stepped apart.
“What?”
Emma pointed.
“Grandpa says we’re late.”
Sarah laughed.
Daniel smiled.
But as they walked away, Sarah realized something.
She wasn’t afraid anymore.
And Daniel realized something too.
He hadn’t fallen in love with Sarah because she needed saving.
He had fallen in love because she had survived without him.
