The trial began that autumn.
Lord Vale was charged with fraud, coercion, conspiracy, and bribery.
Thomas Bell turned witness.
Several officials were removed from office.
The old Whitmore debts were canceled.
But Anna discovered that justice did not immediately repair a family.
Her father had spent twenty years carrying bitterness.
Jonathan had spent twenty years carrying guilt.
Neither knew how to live without either.
One evening, Samuel visited the Hawthorne residence.
Jonathan was sitting alone.
Samuel remained standing.
“My father was wrong about you.”
Jonathan looked up.
“So was I.”
Samuel slowly extended his hand.
Jonathan took it.
Neither man smiled.
But neither let go.
Across the room, Anna watched.
Elias stood beside her.
“You changed everything,” he said.
“No.”
She looked toward the two older men.
“They were waiting for someone to tell the truth.”
Elias smiled faintly.
“Will you stay?”
Anna turned toward him.
“At Hawthorne & Sons?”
“Yes.”
“I haven’t decided.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to be an apprentice forever.”
Elias laughed.
“You shouldn’t be.”
Anna looked at the ledgers.
“I want to learn the business.”
“Why?”
“Because someone should run it honestly.”
Elias nodded.
“I agree.”
Anna smiled.
“That is the first sensible thing you’ve said.”
He laughed.
It was the first time they laughed together.
Neither noticed Jonathan watching them from across the room.
He smiled.
