Little Girl’s Cry Echoed Through the Hall—Until Her CEO Father Saw What the Stepmom Hid
Chapter 7
The Riverside warehouse had been abandoned for years.
Rain fell heavily when Daniel arrived with Marcus and Victoria.
They left the police behind.
Adrian had demanded it.
The warehouse stood beside the river, its windows shattered, its loading doors rusted.
Daniel carried the blue envelope.
Victoria stayed close.
Marcus held a flashlight.
“Something feels wrong,” he said.
Daniel nodded.
They entered.
A single light hung above the center of the warehouse.
Lily sat beneath it.
Her hands were tied, but she was unharmed.
“Daddy!”
Daniel started forward.
A gunshot struck the floor.
He stopped.
Adrian stepped from behind a pillar.
“Another step and she gets hurt.”
Daniel froze.
Victoria whispered, “Adrian.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You betrayed us.”
Victoria shook her head.
“I protected Emily’s daughter.”
“You protected yourself.”
Daniel held up the envelope.
“This is what you want.”
Adrian smiled.
“Not enough.”
“What else?”
“The location.”
“Of the trust?”
“Yes.”
Daniel threw the envelope onto the floor.
Adrian picked it up.
He opened it.
His expression changed.
“What is this?”
“Your copy.”
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“You don’t have the real evidence.”
Daniel said nothing.
Adrian raised his weapon.
“Where is it?”
Victoria suddenly stepped forward.
“Adrian, stop.”
He pointed the gun at her.
“You were always too loyal to Emily.”
Victoria looked directly at him.
“She trusted me.”
“She trusted nobody.”
“She trusted Daniel.”
Adrian laughed.
“She married him without telling him anything.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What happened between you and Emily?”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Your father discovered our scheme.”
“What scheme?”
“Your company wasn’t built on innovation.”
Adrian smiled.
“It was built on theft.”
Daniel felt the accusation hit.
“From whom?”
“Small companies. Investors. Employees. Anyone who couldn’t fight back.”
Victoria shook her head.
“That’s not the whole truth.”
Adrian glared at her.
“You always wanted to be the hero.”
Then Lily screamed.
“Daddy! The floor!”
Daniel looked down.
Lily was pointing toward a loose wooden plank.
He understood.
She had discovered something.
Daniel moved his eyes toward Marcus.
Marcus nodded subtly.
He stepped toward the plank.
Adrian noticed.
“Don’t!”
Too late.
Marcus kicked the board aside.
Beneath it was a steel box.
Adrian rushed toward it.
Daniel tackled him.
The gun went sliding across the floor.
Victoria pulled Lily free.
Marcus grabbed Adrian.
But Adrian laughed.
“You think that’s the trust?”
Daniel opened the box.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Bank records.
Property deeds.
Photographs.
And a letter from Robert Carter.
Daniel unfolded it.
The first line made his heart stop.
My son, if you ever find this, know that I never abandoned you.
