Little Girl’s Cry Echoed Through the Hall—Until Her CEO Father Saw What the Stepmom Hid

Chapter 2

Daniel had spent twelve years building Carter Technologies from a rented office with three employees into one of the fastest-growing technology companies in the country.

He had negotiated million-dollar contracts without blinking.

He had fired executives twice his age.

He had stood before investors who tried to intimidate him and never once allowed his voice to shake.

But sitting on his daughter’s bedroom floor at one in the morning, he felt completely unprepared.

Lily sat against the headboard with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders.

Daniel placed the wooden case on the bed.

Victoria remained near the door.

“You should let me handle this,” she said.

Daniel looked up.

“Why?”

Victoria blinked.

“Because she’s exhausted. She’s been upset for weeks. Children imagine things.”

Daniel’s fingers stopped on the latch.

“Why is she afraid of you?”

Victoria’s expression hardened for less than a second.

Then it softened again.

“I think that question is unfair.”

Lily whispered, “Daddy…”

Daniel turned immediately.

“Yes?”

“Don’t open it here.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“Lily, sweetheart—”

“Don’t!”

The little girl recoiled.

Daniel stood.

“Victoria, leave the room.”

His wife stared at him.

“Daniel.”

“Now.”

For the first time that night, something cold appeared behind her eyes.

But she walked away.

Daniel waited until her footsteps disappeared down the staircase.

Then he locked Lily’s bedroom door from the inside.

“What is in the box?” he asked.

Lily shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Then why were you hiding it?”

“Because Mommy said I wasn’t allowed to tell you.”

Daniel felt something twist in his chest.

“Which Mommy?”

Lily looked at him.

“Victoria.”

Daniel slowly sat beside her.

“How did you get this?”

“From the old room.”

“What old room?”

“The room where Mama kept her things.”

Daniel went still.

Lily’s biological mother, Emily, had died six years earlier after complications from an illness.

Daniel had never remarried because of business.

At least, that was what he had told himself.

Victoria had entered their lives two years later.

She had been warm.

Patient.

Elegant.

And, according to everyone around him, wonderful with Lily.

Daniel had believed them.

Until tonight.

“Did Victoria take something from your mother’s room?”

Lily nodded.

“She said Mama’s things were junk.”

Daniel looked at the box again.

His late wife’s handwriting was unmistakable.

He opened it.

Inside was an old phone.

A flash drive.

Several photographs.

And a folded sheet of paper.

Daniel unfolded it.

His wife’s handwriting filled the page.

Daniel, if you’re reading this, I need you to look beyond what people show you. I was afraid someone inside our home was taking things from us. I couldn’t prove it.

His breathing stopped.

Below that were five words.

Watch the person closest to Lily.

Daniel looked toward the door.

Then toward his daughter.

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Daddy,” she whispered, “I tried to tell you.”
