I Was Dared to Dance With the Quiet Girl—Then She Whispered Something Unforgettable

Chapter 7

I opened the door.

Jake stood outside alone.

His face was bruised.

There was blood on his collar.

“What happened?”

He looked at Emily.

Then at me.

“My father knows.”

I felt my stomach drop.

“Knows what?”

“Everything.”

Jake stepped inside.

“He found out you were searching the warehouse.”

“How?”

“Because he has someone following you.”

I looked at Emily.

Jake continued.

“My father told me to bring him the notebook.”

“Did you?”

Jake laughed bitterly.

“No.”

He pulled a flash drive from his pocket.

“I copied everything from his computer.”

Emily took it.

“What did you find?”

“Payments. Names. Police officers. Judges.”

His voice cracked.

“And your father.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Your father was listed as dead.”

The room became silent.

Jake looked at me.

“But he wasn’t.”

My heart slammed against my ribs.

“What are you saying?”

“I found a photograph taken six months ago.”

He handed me his phone.

The photograph showed an older man walking into a train station.

His face was turned slightly away.

But I knew him.

The same shoulders.

The same posture.

My father.

Alive.

I sat down.

For three years, I had believed he was gone.

Now he was standing in a photograph.

“Where was this taken?”

“Boston.”

Emily immediately stood.

“We need to go.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because if your father is alive, he may be the only person who knows what really happened.”

Jake shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

“What?”

“My father is looking for him too.”

“Why?”

Jake’s eyes filled with fear.

“Because your father took something.”

“What?”

“The original ledger.”
