I Was Dared to Dance With the Quiet Girl—Then She Whispered Something Unforgettable
Chapter 11
Victor demanded a meeting.
He wanted the ledger.
He wanted money.
Most of all, he wanted the evidence destroyed.
The meeting was arranged in an abandoned train depot.
Federal agents surrounded the building.
My father stayed outside.
Emily and I were inside with an investigator.
Then Victor appeared.
He was older than I expected.
Calm.
Almost ordinary.
That made him more frightening.
He placed a briefcase on the table.
“One million dollars.”
The investigator said nothing.
Victor looked at me.
“You look exactly like your father.”
I said:
“You killed people.”
“No.”
He smiled faintly.
“People killed people. I only moved numbers.”
My hands tightened.
“Where is the ledger?”
He opened the briefcase.
Inside was a photograph.
My father standing beside a grave.
Victor spoke quietly.
“He lied to you.”
I stared at the photograph.
“About what?”
“Ask him who really died that night.”
The doors exploded open.
Chaos followed.
Victor ran.
Agents chased him through the depot.
Emily grabbed my arm.
“Don’t!”
But I had already seen something.
A metal door at the far end.
Victor disappeared behind it.
I followed.
Inside was a narrow tunnel.
At the end, Victor was waiting.
He held a gun.
“Stop.”
I froze.
He pointed it at me.
“You have your father’s courage.”
“No,” I said.
“You have his weakness.”
“What weakness?”
Victor smiled.
“He trusted people.”
Then someone stepped behind him.
My father.
“Victor.”
Victor turned.
My father said:
“You should have stayed gone.”
Victor’s expression changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
