I Told My Roommate My Date Rejected Me… Her Next Words Left Me Speechless

Chapter 8

Ryan didn’t get inside.

Our downstairs neighbor heard the noise and called security.

By the time police arrived, he was gone.

But he left one message.

A photograph slid beneath the door.

My father.

Thomas Morgan.

And Olivia Grant.

All three standing together twenty years earlier.

On the back:

You were never roommates by accident.

Claire stared at it.

“I don’t understand.”

Neither did I.

The next morning, we visited Thomas’s former office.

It had been closed for years.

His mother had kept a key.

Inside, old files covered the shelves.

We searched until Claire found a folder labeled:

PERSONAL — D. HAYES

She opened it.

There was my father’s photograph.

A letter.

And a document from twenty years ago.

It was an agreement between my father and Thomas.

They had met during an investigation into Olivia’s financial network.

My father had agreed to help hide evidence.

But he had one condition.

Their children were never to be involved.

Claire looked at me.

“So why did we end up living together?”

I didn’t know.

Then she found a lease.

Our apartment.

My father’s name as the original tenant.

Thomas’s signature as guarantor.

The lease had been arranged before either of us was born.

I stared.

“That can’t be real.”

“It is.”

“But why?”

Claire’s mother answered from behind us.

She had followed us.

“Because your fathers believed the network would survive them.”

We turned.

She looked exhausted.

“They thought the safest place for the evidence was where no one would look.”

“Here?”

“Yes.”

“Why us?”

“Because no one expected their children to find each other.”

Claire shook her head.

“You knew?”

“Not everything.”

Her mother sighed.

“Years ago, Thomas told me that if anything happened, Daniel would need to know the truth.”

“But why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I wanted you safe.”

Claire looked at her.

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You let me think you were dead.”

“I thought it was the only way.”

Silence.

Then another voice came from the hallway.

Olivia.

She walked into the office calmly.

Elegant.

Older than the photograph.

But unmistakably confident.

Claire stepped back.

“You.”

Olivia smiled.

“You have your father’s eyes.”

“You killed him.”

Olivia shook her head.

“I didn’t.”

“You destroyed his life.”

“I protected mine.”

I stepped forward.

“You created Northstar.”

She looked at me.

“So your father told you.”

“The ledger did.”

Olivia smiled.

“Do you know what the ledger really proves?”

“That you stole millions.”

“No.”

She walked closer.

“It proves that everyone around me was afraid.”

She looked at Claire.

“Your father.

Your mother.

Ryan’s father.

Even your father, Daniel.”

I frowned.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“He wasn’t innocent.”

I opened my mouth.

She continued.

“He helped move the money.”

Claire looked at me.

My stomach twisted.

“No.”

Olivia nodded.

“He did.”

Then she dropped the sentence that changed everything.

“Your father wasn’t helping Thomas expose me.”

“He was helping me hide.”

Silence.

I felt dizzy.

My father had been part of the network.

All those years, I’d believed he had died a normal death after losing everything.

But maybe I’d never known him at all.

Claire touched my arm.

“Daniel…”

Olivia smiled.

“That is why the ledger matters.”

She turned toward the door.

“Because it doesn’t only destroy me.”

“It destroys your father too.”

Then she left.

I stood frozen.

Claire took my hand.

“Don’t believe her.”

“Why not?”

“Because she wants us divided.”

I looked at her.

“And what if she’s telling the truth?”

Claire didn’t answer.

Then she said,

“Then we find out.”

She squeezed my hand.

“But we do it together.”

For the first time since this began, I understood what she had been trying to tell me from the beginning.

Some people weren’t what you thought.

Not even the people you loved.
