I Told My Roommate My Date Rejected Me… Her Next Words Left Me Speechless
Chapter 11
Claire wanted to trade the ledger.
I refused.
Not because I didn’t care about her mother.
Because I knew Olivia’s plan.
If we gave her the original evidence, we would lose the only thing that could clear us.
So we created our own plan.
We made a copy.
We altered nothing.
We gave Ryan what looked like the original.
But the real ledger stayed with federal investigators.
Claire hated the idea.
“What if they hurt her?”
“They won’t.”
“How do you know?”
“I don’t.”
She looked at me.
“That isn’t comforting.”
“I know.”
I took her hand.
“But I’m not going to gamble your mother’s life on a threat.”
We contacted an investigator I knew through work.
He agreed to monitor the exchange.
Ryan arrived at the old warehouse.
He took the fake ledger.
“Good.”
“Where’s my mother?”
“Alive.”
“I want to see her.”
He showed another video.
Claire’s mother was still alive.
Then the lights went out.
Everything happened at once.
A gunshot.
Glass breaking.
People shouting.
We ran.
Claire grabbed my hand.
We reached the side exit.
Outside, police vehicles surrounded the building.
Ryan tried to escape.
He was caught.
Olivia wasn’t there.
She had anticipated everything.
The investigators found a second location.
Her office.
Inside were computers containing decades of financial records.
And one file that changed the case.
A recording of Olivia talking about Thomas.
She admitted she had arranged the original fraud.
She admitted using Ryan.
She admitted creating false evidence against my father.
But she denied killing Thomas.
The investigators asked who did.
Olivia named someone.
Ryan’s father.
He had ordered the accident.
Ryan himself had never known the whole truth.
He believed his father had died protecting the family.
In reality, his father had been protecting Olivia.
The entire network had been built on lies.
And everyone had paid a price.
My father lost his reputation.
Thomas lost his life.
Claire lost her mother for six years.
Ryan lost his future.
And two strangers who had become roommates were suddenly standing in the middle of the truth.
That night, Claire and I sat on the apartment floor.
She leaned against my shoulder.
“We survived.”
“Barely.”
“You’re still here.”
“So are you.”
She smiled.
“I’ve wanted to do this for a long time.”
“Do what?”
She kissed me.
It was gentle.
Careful.
Nothing like the dramatic kisses in movies.
It was better.
Because it felt real.
When we pulled apart, she whispered,
“I should have told you sooner.”
“I should have told you too.”
“What?”
“That I liked you.”
She laughed.
“How long?”
“Probably a year.”
She stared.
“You’re kidding.”
“No.”
“So we’re both idiots.”
“Yes.”
She rested her forehead against mine.
“Good.”
“Why good?”
“Because at least we’re idiots together.”
I laughed.
But then she became serious.
“Daniel?”
“Yeah?”
“What happens now?”
I looked around the apartment.
The place where we’d lived as roommates.
The place where our fathers had hidden a secret.
The place where we had become friends.
And now something more.
“I don’t know.”
She smiled.
“Then we’ll figure it out.”
