I Thought My Coworker Was Flirting With Someone Else Until She Pulled Me Aside and Told Me the Truth
Chapter 10
The revelation broke something inside me.
My father had helped build Orion.
The system that had ruined lives.
The system Elias had turned into a weapon.
And yet he had also tried to destroy it.
The contradiction was unbearable.
Hannah read the rest of the letter.
My father explained that he had designed the original information architecture with Elias because he believed it could protect employees from hostile corporate takeovers.
He had trusted Elias.
He had been wrong.
When he discovered what Orion had become, he tried to dismantle it.
Rebecca Miller helped him.
Elias retaliated.
He threatened their families.
He manipulated the company.
And when my father refused to cooperate, Elias began building the case against him.
But my father had one advantage.
He knew how the system worked.
So he created a hidden failsafe.
It required two people.
One who knew the architecture.
And one who remembered the access pattern.
My father.
Rebecca’s daughter.
Hannah.
I looked at her.
“That’s why you’re the key.”
“Yes.”
“But why me?”
She read the next line.
Because my son is the only person Elias will never suspect.
I stared.
My father had planned for me to enter the company.
To become the person who would eventually expose it.
He hadn’t known whether I would succeed.
He had simply created a path.
I sat down.
Hannah knelt beside me.
“You okay?”
“No.”
She took my hand.
“You don’t have to be.”
I looked at her.
“What happened to my father?”
“He got close.”
“Then?”
“He died.”
I nodded.
“But he left us this.”
She pointed to the final page.
A map.
The original Orion server.
It was buried beneath Mercer & Lane headquarters.
We returned that night.
The company had been placed under government supervision.
The building was nearly empty.
We went to the basement.
The map led us deeper.
Behind a concrete wall was a server room.
The original system was still running.
Old hardware.
Old wires.
A single monitor.
On it was a message.
WELCOME HOME, DANIEL.
I froze.
Hannah stepped beside me.
Elias was still inside the network.
A camera turned on.
His face appeared.
“You found the original.”
I stared.
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere you can’t reach.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted you to understand.”
“What?”
“Your father didn’t fail.”
Hannah frowned.
“He chose you.”
The screen displayed a file.
My childhood records.
My school reports.
My career path.
Every major decision I had made.
Elias had watched me for years.
“This is why you were hired,” he said.
“To become the final auditor.”
I felt sick.
“And Hannah?”
“She was the second key.”
Hannah stepped forward.
“You planned our lives.”
“I planned the environment.”
“We chose our own decisions.”
Elias laughed.
“Did you?”
I looked at Hannah.
She squeezed my hand.
“Yes.”
The server began counting down.
SYSTEM WIPE: 10:00
“What are you doing?”
“Deleting everything.”
I stared.
“You’ll destroy the evidence.”
“Exactly.”
Hannah moved to the terminal.
“I can stop it.”
Elias laughed.
“You can try.”
She began entering numbers.
The system rejected them.
She tried again.
Rejected.
She closed her eyes.
Then whispered something.
A sequence.
Numbers her mother had taught her as a child.
She entered them.
The screen changed.
ACCESS PATTERN RECOGNIZED.
The system unlocked.
Elias stopped laughing.
“What?”
Hannah smiled.
“My mother taught me well.”
Files began copying.
All evidence.
All names.
All transactions.
Then something unexpected appeared.
ORIGINAL CREATOR: MICHAEL CARTER
SECOND ARCHITECT: REBECCA MILLER
SYSTEM OVERRIDE: DANIEL CARTER + HANNAH MILLER
I stared.
The system wasn’t designed for me alone.
It was designed for us.
Together.
Elias had assumed we would act separately.
He had been wrong.
Hannah looked at me.
“Do it.”
I placed my hand on the biometric scanner.
The system asked:
DESTROY OR PRESERVE?
I looked at Hannah.
“What do you think?”
“Preserve the truth.”
I pressed PRESERVE.
The entire archive copied to external investigators.
The wipe failed.
And for the first time, Elias’s voice sounded afraid.
