I Thought My Coworker Was Flirting With Someone Else Until She Pulled Me Aside and Told Me the Truth

Chapter 12

A year later, the company had changed.

Not perfectly.

No company ever is.

But honestly.

That mattered.

Hannah became director of ethics and compliance.

I took over internal audit.

We worked together.

Not because we were required to.

Because we trusted each other.

Some days were hard.

There were lawsuits.

Employees who blamed us for everything.

Executives who wanted the old system back.

But there were also letters from people who had been helped.

One employee wrote:

For the first time, I can report a problem without worrying that my boss can access my private life.

That letter meant more to me than any promotion.

One Friday evening, Hannah and I stayed late.

She looked at the clock.

“You know we’re the last ones here.”

“Yes.”

“You’re not worried?”

“No.”

She smiled.

“Why?”

“I know who’s beside me.”

She laughed.

“That was disgustingly sentimental.”

“I’m learning.”

She packed her bag.

Then stopped.

“Daniel.”

“What?”

“My mother left something for you.”

I frowned.

“Your mother?”

She nodded.

A small wooden box.

Inside was a photograph of my father and Rebecca.

But there was another person.

A young woman.

I didn’t recognize her.

“Who is she?”

Hannah looked at the back.

A name was written.

Sarah Mercer.

Daniel’s daughter.

Elias’s granddaughter.

Hannah stared.

“She worked with my mother.”

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

“She was trying to stop Elias?”

Hannah nodded.

“And she survived.”

We looked at each other.

The past still had another door.

We found Sarah.

She was living quietly under another name.

She told us the truth.

She had been helping her father because she believed she could change him.

Then she discovered what Orion had become.

She tried to expose him.

He threatened her.

She disappeared.

But before she did, she recorded everything.

Enough to finish the case.

Elias’s final confession was released.

The last hidden accounts were frozen.

Orion was finally gone.

No secret system.

No hidden network.

No shadow empire.

The company was finally free of the man who had created it.

Sarah joined the witness protection program.

Hannah forgave her.

I forgave Daniel, my father.

Not because what he did was right.

Because he had tried to fix what he had helped create.

That distinction mattered.

One evening, Hannah and I sat outside the office.

The city lights were beginning to appear.

“You know what I thought the first time I saw you?” she asked.

“What?”

“That you were annoying.”

I laughed.

“And?”

“You asked too many questions.”

“I still do.”

“I know.”

“What did you think after that?”

“That you were kind.”

I looked at her.

“That’s all?”

“No.”

She smiled.

“That you were brave.”

I laughed.

“I hid in a stairwell.”

“You still went.”

“Fair.”

She leaned against me.

“I was scared that if I told you the truth, I’d lose you.”

“You almost did.”

“I know.”

“But you didn’t.”

She smiled.

“No.”

She took my hand.

“I stayed.”

“So did I.”
