I Donated My Kidney to My Wife—Then I Heard Her Secret Through the Hospital Curtain

Chapter 9

Someone had taken it.

We searched the hallway.

Nothing.

Then the emergency lights came on.

A man stood at the far end.

Thomas Vale.

He was older than in the photograph.

Gray hair.

Expensive coat.

Calm expression.

He looked at Claire.

“You should have stopped years ago.”

Claire stepped forward.

“You destroyed my father.”

Thomas smiled.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“Your father did.”

My hands tightened.

“You’re lying.”

“Am I?”

Thomas pulled out his phone.

On the screen was a recording.

My father.

Speaking.

Admitting to the fraud.

Admitting to destroying Marcus’s reputation.

I felt the ground disappear beneath me.

Claire looked at me.

Her face was devastated.

Thomas smiled.

“Your father confessed before he died.”

“Why?”

“Because guilt makes people predictable.”

Claire moved toward him.

“You forged the rest.”

“Of course.”

“Why?”

Thomas looked at her.

“Because your father was about to expose me.”

Then he turned toward me.

“And your father took the evidence.”

“So you killed him?”

Thomas’s smile disappeared.

“I didn’t have to.”

He walked away.

Claire grabbed my hand.

“Daniel, wait.”

I pulled away.

“Did you know?”

“About the confession? No.”

“You knew my father was involved.”

“Yes.”

“And you still married me.”

“I thought the evidence would prove he wasn’t responsible for everything.”

“Thought?”

She looked helpless.

“I was wrong.”

We returned home separately.

For the first time in six years, Claire slept in the guest room.

I sat alone in our bedroom.

Then I noticed something.

The photograph from the hotel was still in my pocket.

I turned it over.

There was writing beneath the date.

A sentence I hadn’t noticed.

“Never trust the man who offers you the truth first.”

Thomas had offered me the truth.

Claire had offered me the truth.

Which one of them was still lying?

At 3:00 a.m., I heard the front door.

Claire was leaving.

I followed her.

She drove to an abandoned warehouse.

Adrian was waiting.

I watched them from across the street.

Then Claire handed him an envelope.

Adrian opened it.

His face went white.

Claire said something.

He shook his head.

Then he looked directly toward my car.

He knew I was there.

And instead of warning Claire, he pointed at me.

“Come inside, Daniel.”
