I Donated My Kidney to My Wife—Then I Heard Her Secret Through the Hospital Curtain
Chapter 11
We reached the cemetery just before dawn.
Thomas was standing beside my father’s grave.
The hard drive lay on the stone.
“You want answers?” he asked.
I stepped forward.
“Give me the drive.”
Thomas smiled.
“You still don’t understand.”
“I understand enough.”
“No.”
He looked at Claire.
“She told you half the truth.”
Claire stiffened.
Thomas pulled out a second photograph.
It showed Claire meeting him six years earlier.
Before our wedding.
I stared at her.
“You met him?”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“What did he want?”
“He offered me the evidence.”
“Why?”
“To make me stop.”
Thomas laughed.
“He offered her money.”
Claire looked at me.
“I refused.”
“But you accepted something else,” Thomas said.
I looked at Claire.
“What?”
Thomas answered for her.
“Your silence.”
Claire shook her head.
“I didn’t know what he meant.”
“You signed the agreement.”
She looked at me.
“I thought it was a confidentiality agreement.”
Thomas smiled.
“It was a confession.”
He handed me a copy.
Claire had unknowingly signed a statement taking responsibility for accessing confidential company records.
If Thomas released it, she could go to prison.
I looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I thought I could fix it.”
“You kept digging.”
“Yes.”
“You kept lying.”
“Yes.”
“And then you saved me.”
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.”
I finally understood.
Claire had started our marriage wanting justice.
She had continued because she loved me.
And she had lied because she was terrified that the truth would destroy both of us.
But that didn’t excuse what she had done.
Thomas stepped closer.
“Give me the photograph.”
I didn’t move.
“You don’t have anything over us anymore.”
He smiled.
“Don’t I?”
He pulled out his phone.
On the screen was a video.
Claire.
Six years earlier.
Sitting across from Thomas.
And saying:
“I’ll marry Daniel if that’s what it takes.”
My chest tightened.
Claire closed her eyes.
“I said that.”
I looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because I hated what your family represented.”
“And now?”
She looked directly at me.
“Now I hate what I became.”
Thomas reached for the hard drive.
I stepped in front of him.
“You’ve spent years controlling people with secrets.”
I held up my phone.
“I’ve spent the last six months recording every conversation since I discovered the truth.”
Thomas’s face changed.
Adrian smiled.
“The cemetery cameras are recording too.”
For the first time, Thomas looked afraid.
But then he laughed.
“You think that’s enough?”
He pointed toward the road.
Two police cars appeared.
Not for him.
For Claire.
