I Donated My Kidney to My Wife—Then I Heard Her Secret Through the Hospital Curtain

Chapter 5

I met Adrian in a quiet diner outside town.

He was younger than I expected.

Late thirties.

Thin.

Tired.

He kept looking over his shoulder.

“You look terrible,” he said.

“So does my marriage.”

He gave a humorless smile.

“Fair.”

I leaned forward.

“Start talking.”

Adrian put an envelope on the table.

Inside were photographs.

My father.

Marcus Hart.

Claire.

And another man.

“Who’s he?”

“Thomas Vale.”

I stared at the photograph.

“Your father’s attorney.”

“What does he have to do with Claire?”

“Everything.”

Adrian explained that twelve years ago, Marcus Hart had discovered financial fraud inside a company my father controlled.

He planned to expose it.

My father panicked.

Thomas Vale helped him hide the evidence.

Marcus lost his business.

His reputation collapsed.

Then he died.

But there was more.

Marcus had left behind proof.

A hard drive containing financial records.

It disappeared after his death.

“Where is it now?” I asked.

Adrian looked at me.

“That’s what Claire has been trying to find.”

“Why?”

“Because she believes it will prove her father was innocent.”

I thought about the conversations behind the curtain.

“Then why marry me?”

Adrian looked uncomfortable.

“Because your father left you something.”

“What?”

“A trust.”

I stared at him.

“Claire knew about it?”

“She believed the missing evidence was hidden inside the trust’s records.”

I leaned back.

“So she married me to get access.”

Adrian didn’t answer.

He didn’t have to.

I remembered Claire asking me, two weeks after our wedding, to sign documents transferring access to my father’s archived business records.

At the time, I had thought nothing of it.

Then came the strangest part.

“Why did she need my kidney?”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“She didn’t.”

My stomach turned.

“What?”

“She was already on a transplant list.”

“Then why did she accept mine?”

“Because the moment you became her donor, you became legally tied to certain medical and financial records. Your father’s insurance trust was connected to the transplant expenses.”

I stared at him.

That didn’t make sense.

Adrian pushed another document toward me.

The truth was worse.

The transplant wasn’t part of Claire’s original plan.

But when her condition suddenly deteriorated, she needed a donor immediately.

And I was the only person close enough to save her.

She chose the kidney.

But not necessarily because she loved me.

I left the diner with one question burning through my mind.

What had Claire been willing to do if I hadn’t been a match?
