I Came To Fix Her Tractor Sunday — Her Twin Girls Whispered: “Mama’s First Smile In Months”

Chapter 8

The new barn was completed before summer.

It was larger than the old one.

Stronger.

Better.

The community held a celebration.

There was food.

Music.

Children running through the fields.

The twins wore matching dresses.

They dragged Ethan into a dance.

Hannah watched them.

One of the girls ran back.

“Mama!”

“What?”

“Come dance!”

Hannah laughed.

“I don’t know how.”

“Yes, you do.”

The girl grabbed her hand.

Hannah joined them.

Ethan watched.

She was laughing.

Really laughing.

The twins were laughing too.

He realized he had never seen anything more beautiful.

Later that evening, Hannah found him sitting alone near the barn.

“You’re hiding.”

“I’m resting.”

“Same thing.”

She sat beside him.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Everything.”

Ethan smiled.

“You’ve thanked me enough.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I haven’t.”

She looked toward the house.

“The girls love you.”

“I love them.”

Hannah looked at him.

“I know.”

There was a long silence.

Then she said:

“And I love you.”

Ethan looked at her.

Hannah’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t expect it.”

“Neither did I.”

“I was scared.”

“So was I.”

She laughed.

“You’re supposed to say something romantic.”

“I repair tractors.”

She laughed.

“You’re terrible.”

“I know.”

She leaned closer.

Their foreheads touched.

Then they kissed.

It wasn’t dramatic.

There were no fireworks.

No music.

Just two people who had spent years surviving finally allowing themselves to love again.

From inside the house came whispering.

The twins were watching.

One whispered:

“Mama kissed Ethan.”

The other gasped.

“She’s really happy.”

They giggled.

Outside, Hannah smiled.

Ethan asked:

“What?”

She shook her head.

“Nothing.”
