I Came To Fix Her Tractor Sunday — Her Twin Girls Whispered: “Mama’s First Smile In Months”
Chapter 6
Winter arrived early.
Snow covered the farm.
The fields became quiet.
The tractor sat beneath a shelter.
The house felt warmer.
Ethan visited often.
He brought groceries.
The twins helped him decorate the Christmas tree.
Hannah watched from the kitchen.
She hadn’t celebrated Christmas properly since her husband died.
This year was different.
The twins laughed.
Ethan pretended he couldn’t reach the highest branch.
They screamed at him.
“You’re too tall!”
“I’m not!”
“Yes!”
Hannah laughed.
Then she realized she was laughing.
Not pretending.
Not forcing it.
Really laughing.
The girls noticed.
They always noticed.
Later that night, after the twins went to bed, Hannah stood beside the tree.
“I can’t remember the last Christmas I enjoyed.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You enjoyed this one.”
She smiled.
“I did.”
He stepped closer.
“Good.”
She looked at him.
“You know what scares me?”
“What?”
“That I’m starting to feel happy.”
Ethan frowned.
“Why would that scare you?”
“Because after my husband died, I thought happiness meant I was forgetting him.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I still love my wife.”
Hannah looked at him.
“And you’re happy sometimes.”
“Exactly.”
He paused.
“Loving someone who died doesn’t mean you have to stop living.”
Hannah’s eyes filled with tears.
She stepped closer.
“How did you learn that?”
“I didn’t.”
He smiled sadly.
“I’m still learning.”
She nodded.
Then she hugged him.
It wasn’t romantic.
Not exactly.
It was something deeper.
Two people who had lost pieces of themselves finding a reason to keep going.
The twins watched from the hallway.
One whispered:
“Should we tell them?”
The other shook her head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Mom is smiling.”
They disappeared.
