I Agreed to Be Her Fake Fiancé at a High School Reunion — Then I Uncovered the Dark Secret She Was Running From

Chapter 13

Grace eventually learned the story.

Not every detail.

But enough.

One evening, when she was fifteen, she asked:

“Mom, did Dad really pretend to be your fiancé?”

Emma laughed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was scared.”

“Of what?”

“Someone from my past.”

Grace frowned.

“Why didn’t you just tell people?”

Emma smiled.

“Because sometimes fear makes you hide things.”

“Did Dad know?”

“He knew enough.”

“Did you love him then?”

Emma looked toward Daniel.

He was in the kitchen.

“I don’t know.”

He shouted:

“That sounds terrible!”

Everyone laughed.

Emma continued:

“I loved him as my best friend.”

Grace nodded.

“Then?”

“Then I realized the person who made me feel safest was the person I had been looking for all along.”

Grace smiled.

“That’s cute.”

Daniel entered.

“Are we talking about me?”

“Unfortunately.”

He laughed.

Grace looked at him.

“You were really brave.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I was scared too.”

“Then why did you stay?”

He looked at Emma.

“Because she asked.”

Grace smiled.

“That’s love.”

Emma nodded.

“Yes.”

That conversation remained with them.

The story was no longer painful.

It had become family history.

A reminder that sometimes love begins as friendship.

Sometimes courage begins as simply showing up.

And sometimes the person you trust enough to pretend with becomes the person you can finally be honest with.
