I Agreed to Be Her Fake Fiancé at a High School Reunion — Then I Uncovered the Dark Secret She Was Running From

Chapter 10

The second reunion felt completely different.

Emma arrived holding Daniel’s hand.

This time, there was no fake ring.

No secret.

No fear.

People recognized her.

Some congratulated her.

Others mentioned her work.

One woman said:

“I read your article.”

Emma smiled.

“Thank you.”

“You’re helping my sister.”

Emma froze.

“I’m glad.”

Then she looked across the room.

Brad was there.

He looked older.

Tired.

Alone.

For a moment, Emma felt sixteen again.

Then Daniel squeezed her hand.

She breathed.

Brad approached.

“I didn’t know you’d come.”

Emma nodded.

“Neither did I.”

He looked at Daniel.

Then at her ring.

“You’re married.”

“Yes.”

“Happy?”

“Very.”

Brad smiled.

“I deserved that.”

Emma frowned.

“What?”

“The fact that you came back happy.”

She didn’t answer.

He looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma studied him.

“I believe you.”

He looked surprised.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

She paused.

“But forgiveness doesn’t mean friendship.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

He walked away.

Daniel looked at her.

“Are you okay?”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

She looked around the gym.

Same walls.

Different woman.

She had once walked into this room afraid of being judged.

Now she walked out without caring.

The reunion ended quietly.

Outside, Emma stood beneath the old school sign.

Daniel joined her.

“How does it feel?”

She smiled.

“Small.”

“The school?”

“My fear.”

He understood.

She looked at him.

“You know what I realized?”

“What?”

“I thought Brad owned part of my past.”

“Did he?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I gave him that space.”

Daniel kissed her forehead.

“Not anymore.”

They drove home.

The story was over.

Or so they thought.
