This time, Mia and Noah arrived together.
The host recognized them immediately.

Everyone laughed.
Mia shook her head.
“Please don’t.”
Noah smiled.
The auction included another date.
A volunteer was brought onto the stage.
Mia watched the bidding begin.
She leaned toward Noah.
“Should we bid?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because we already know how expensive dates can become.”
She laughed.
Then something unexpected happened.
A young woman in the audience stood.
“I’ll bid five thousand.”
The room became silent.
Everyone looked around.
Then a young man stood beside her.
“I’ll bid ten.”
The audience laughed.
Mia realized what was happening.
Another couple had decided to turn the auction into their own story.
The host smiled.
“Twenty thousand!”
The crowd erupted.
Mia looked at Noah.
“Maybe we started something.”
He kissed her forehead.
“Maybe.”
Later that evening, Mia stepped outside.
Noah joined her.
“You okay?”
“Yeah.”
She looked at the city lights.
“Do you ever think about what would have happened if you hadn’t bid?”
Noah smiled.
“I probably would’ve spent the rest of my life regretting it.”
Mia looked at him.
“Me too.”
They stood quietly.
Then Noah said:
“Would you do it again?”
“What?”
“The date.”
Mia smiled.
“I’d pay five thousand to relive it.”
He laughed.
“You don’t have to.”
“I know.”
She held his hand.
