His Fiancée Betrayed Him Publicly—Then the Mafia Boss Chose the Woman Everyone Mocked
Chapter 15
Twenty years after the night Adrian’s fiancée humiliated him in front of an entire ballroom, almost everything had changed.
Adrian was fifty-five.
Elena was forty-nine.
Their daughter, Emma, was twenty.
She was studying law and working with the family foundation.
Moretti Holdings had become a respected multinational company.
The old scandals were history.
The family had changed.
The city had changed.
But Adrian and Elena still returned to the Bellagio Grand every anniversary.
Not because they loved the place.
Because they remembered what it represented.
One evening, they stood in the empty ballroom.
The same golden lights.
The same floor.
The same podium.
Elena looked around.
“I hated this place.”
Adrian smiled.
“I know.”
“I wanted to disappear.”
“I know.”
“And now?”
She took his hand.
“Now I think it changed my life.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Mine too.”
Emma entered the ballroom.
“Are you two doing the sentimental thing again?”
Elena laughed.
“Yes.”
Emma shook her head.
“You’ve been married too long.”
Adrian smiled.
“Not long enough.”
Emma rolled her eyes.
Then she looked at the old podium.
“Is this where Grandma Isabella threw the ring?”
Adrian nodded.
Emma smiled.
“I still can’t believe she thought Mom was nobody.”
Elena looked at her daughter.
“People see what they’re looking for.”
Emma nodded.
“And what did Dad see?”
Adrian answered.
“Someone cleaning up a mess nobody else cared about.”
Emma smiled.
“That sounds like Mom.”
Elena laughed.
“Thank you.”
They walked toward the center of the ballroom.
Adrian took Elena’s hand.
“I want to ask you something.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Again?”
He laughed.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Do you remember when you told me I was better off without Isabella?”
“Yes.”
“You were right.”
She smiled.
“I usually am.”
Adrian shook his head.
“Dangerous woman.”
She kissed him.
He held her close.
For years, people had called Elena ordinary.
Too quiet.
Too poor.
Too simple.
Not beautiful enough.
Not powerful enough.
Not worthy of a man like Adrian Moretti.
They had been wrong.
She hadn’t needed to become extraordinary in someone else’s eyes.
She had simply needed someone willing to look beyond the surface.
And Adrian had needed something too.
Not another person impressed by his power.
Not another person who wanted his name.
He needed someone who could look directly at him and still tell him when he was wrong.
The woman everyone mocked had become his wife.
His partner.
The mother of his daughter.
And the person who helped him build a life beyond fear.
Adrian looked at Elena.
“You know what I think?”
“What?”
“That woman who was mocked at this hotel became the bravest person I’ve ever known.”
Elena smiled.
“And the feared mafia boss?”
“Yes?”
“He became a very good husband.”
He laughed.
“I’ll take that.”
They walked out of the ballroom together.
Behind them was the place where everything had started.
Ahead of them was everything they had built.
And somewhere between betrayal and forgiveness, fear and trust, power and love, two people who had never expected to belong together had found the one thing neither of them had been looking for.
Home.
