His Fiancée Betrayed Him Publicly—Then the Mafia Boss Chose the Woman Everyone Mocked
Chapter 3
Elena accepted the job two days later.
Not because of the money.
Because Adrian had sent a formal employment contract through a law firm.
No hidden clauses.
No personal obligations.
No strange requirements.
Her position was executive operations coordinator.
Her task was simple.
Find problems.
Fix them.
And tell Adrian the truth.
The first morning, she walked into Moretti Holdings headquarters feeling completely out of place.
The building was beautiful.
Glass.
Stone.
Steel.
Everyone seemed to know exactly where they belonged.
Elena didn’t.
A receptionist looked at her.
“Appointment?”
“I’m starting today.”
“With whom?”
“Adrian Moretti.”
The receptionist nearly dropped her pen.
“Of course.”
Elena entered the elevator.
When the doors opened on the executive floor, she saw Adrian through the glass wall of his office.
He was arguing with three men.
“Then we’re done.”
One of them looked angry.
“You’re making a mistake.”
Adrian’s voice remained calm.
“No.”
The man laughed.
“You think you can walk away from this?”
Adrian stared at him.
“Watch me.”
The three men left.
Elena waited.
Adrian looked at her.
“You came.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He pointed toward a desk outside his office.
“That’s yours.”
Elena looked at it.
“That’s a very large desk.”
“You’ll need it.”
She sat down.
Within an hour, she realized why.
Adrian’s company had dozens of active projects.
Shipping.
Hotels.
Restaurants.
Real estate.
Private investments.
His executives constantly sent him problems.
Contracts.
Staff issues.
Vendor disputes.
Scheduling conflicts.
Elena began organizing everything.
Then she noticed something.
Three suppliers were charging Moretti Holdings significantly more than competitors.
She circled the invoices.
“These prices are wrong.”
Her assistant nearby whispered,
“Don’t question procurement.”
Elena looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because no one does.”
Adrian walked past.
Elena called him.
“Mr. Moretti.”
He stopped.
“What?”
“You’re overpaying.”
He came back.
“For what?”
She showed him the invoices.
“These vendors are charging twenty to thirty percent above market.”
Adrian looked at them.
“Who approved them?”
Elena pointed to the signatures.
“Your chief procurement officer.”
He looked at her.
“Did you check all the contracts?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Three hours.”
He almost smiled.
“You’ve been here four hours.”
“I’m efficient.”
Adrian took the files.
“Keep digging.”
That afternoon, he fired two senior executives.
Elena didn’t know what that meant.
She was simply doing her job.
That night, Adrian called her into his office.
“You found something.”
He placed a folder on the desk.
A list of internal payments.
“Look.”
Elena read it.
The same suppliers she had flagged were connected to another company.
A company owned by Isabella’s father.
Her expression changed.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“Elena.”
“Yes?”
“Isabella didn’t end our engagement because she suddenly realized she hated me.”
Elena looked up.
“She had another reason.”
Adrian nodded.
“She wanted access to this company.”
“To what?”
“Control.”
He showed her documents proving Isabella’s family had been trying to influence Moretti Holdings for years.
The public betrayal wasn’t random.
It was strategic.
The engagement had been an opportunity.
The humiliation was part of the plan.
Elena stared at him.
“You really trust nobody.”
Adrian looked at her.
“I trusted her.”
He paused.
“Once.”
