He Was the Deadliest Gun in the Territory — Until a Child Gave Him Something Worth Fighting For
Chapter 5
Three days later, Evelyn found Daniel’s letter.
It was hidden beneath a loose floorboard in the cabin they had been using temporarily.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
Cole stood nearby.
“What does it say?”
She read silently.
Then her face went white.
“What?”
She handed him the letter.
Daniel had written:
Evelyn, if you’re reading this, they found me.
Crowe knows I have proof.
But he doesn’t know where it is.
I hid the evidence where no grown man would think to search.
Noah carries the first key.
Cole looked at the boy.
“The locket.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at Noah.
“Noah, give me your locket.”
He obeyed.
Evelyn opened it.
Behind the tiny photograph was a small metal key.
Noah stared.
“What does it open?”
Cole took the key.
“That is the question.”
Evelyn looked at the letter again.
There was one final sentence.
Trust the man who arrives when you least expect him.
She looked at Cole.
He stared back.
Neither spoke.
Then a branch snapped outside.
Cole immediately drew his gun.
Someone was watching them.
