He Was the Deadliest Gun in the Territory — Until a Child Gave Him Something Worth Fighting For

Chapter 14

Years passed.

The story of Cole Tanner slowly became a legend.

People still talked about his speed.

They told stories about the gunslinger who could draw before another man could blink.

They talked about the time he defeated three men without killing any of them.

But those stories were never the ones Noah remembered.

He remembered the man who taught him how to ride.

The man who repaired his first broken saddle.

The man who waited outside the schoolhouse when he was sick.

The man who always came home before dark.

One evening, Noah—now a young man—sat beside Cole on the porch.

“Pa?”

Cole looked at him.

“What?”

“Do you ever miss being the fastest gun in the West?”

Cole looked toward the revolver hanging above the fireplace.

Then he looked at Evelyn.

She was standing in the doorway, smiling.

“No.”

“Not even a little?”

Cole smiled.

“I spent years trying to become the fastest man alive.”

“And?”

“I succeeded.”

Noah laughed.

Cole leaned back.

“But that wasn’t the best thing I ever did.”

“What was?”

Cole looked at the house.

“At first, I thought saving you was the beginning of your story.”

Noah frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Cole smiled.

“It was the beginning of mine.”

Noah looked toward Evelyn.

She walked outside and sat beside them.

Cole took her hand.

The sun disappeared behind the hills.

The famous gunslinger who had once ridden without a destination finally understood something.

He had spent half his life believing that being free meant belonging to no one.

He had been wrong.

Sometimes freedom wasn’t about having nowhere to go.

Sometimes freedom was knowing exactly where you belonged.

And no matter how far Cole Tanner traveled after that day…

There was always a little house waiting for him.

A woman he loved.

A son who called him Pa.

And a family worth coming home to.
