He Was the Deadliest Gun in the Territory — Until a Child Gave Him Something Worth Fighting For
Chapter 13
Cole and Evelyn married the following spring.
There was no grand ceremony.
Just a small church.
A few friends.
And Noah standing proudly beside them.
Afterward, they returned to the ranch.
Noah ran ahead.
Cole and Evelyn walked slowly behind him.
“You happy?” Cole asked.
“Yes.”
“Even with me?”
She laughed.
“Especially with you.”
Cole smiled.
“I never thought I’d have this.”
“What?”
“A home.”
Evelyn took his hand.
“You do now.”
Years earlier, Cole had believed freedom meant being able to leave whenever he wanted.
Now he understood.
Freedom could also mean having someone you chose to stay for.
That night, they sat together on the porch.
Noah slept inside.
The stars covered the sky.
Evelyn rested her head on Cole’s shoulder.
“Do you regret saving him?”
Cole looked through the window.
At Noah.
Then at Evelyn.
“Never.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
Cole kissed her forehead.
“Best mistake I ever made.”
