He Warned Her He Came With Four Children — The Cowgirl Said, “Good This Ranch Needs a Family”
Chapter 15
Twenty years later, the old ranch still stood.
The house had been expanded.
The barn was larger.
There were horses in every pasture.
Children’s laughter filled the yard.
Mary had married a neighboring rancher.
Samuel had become a cattleman.
Ruth had moved to town.
Joseph had inherited his father’s stubbornness.
Thomas and Clara sat together on the porch.
Older now.
Gray-haired.
Still holding hands.
A young girl ran across the yard.
“Grandmother!”
Clara smiled.
The girl climbed onto her lap.
Thomas watched them.
“You remember the first night?”
Clara laughed.
“The four children?”
“Yes.”
“You warned me.”
“I did.”
“You said I didn’t know what I was taking on.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
She looked at him.
“You were frightened.”
“I was.”
“Of what?”
Thomas looked toward the fields.
“Of losing them.”
Clara squeezed his hand.
“You didn’t.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“I found you.”
She smiled.
“And I found four children who made this place worth coming home to.”
Thomas looked across the ranch.
The same land.
The same hills.
But nothing else was the same.
Years ago, he had arrived with four children and one wagon.
He had expected to be turned away.
Instead, a lonely cowgirl had opened her door.
She had given them food.
Then shelter.
Then courage.
And finally, a home.
Thomas had once believed he was bringing four children to a stranger’s ranch.
He had been wrong.
He had brought four children to the woman who would become their mother.
And Clara had been right from the beginning.
The ranch did need a family.
It just needed someone brave enough to make one.
