Whitfield smiled.

“Give me the ledger.”

Clara looked at Thomas.

Then at Mary.

She handed it over.

Whitfield opened it.

He smiled.

“Finally.”

Then he noticed something.

The final page was missing.

His smile disappeared.

“Where is it?”

Clara said nothing.

Thomas struggled to stand.

“Clara…”

She looked at him.

And then she smiled.

Not at Whitfield.

At Mary.

“Now.”

Mary ducked.

Clara fired.

The shot struck Whitfield’s pistol.

Thomas fired immediately after.

Whitfield fell.

The ranch went silent.

Then the sound of approaching horses came from the road.

Dozens of riders.

But these were not Whitfield’s men.

They were ranchers.

Widows.

Farmers.

Families.

Every person whose land Whitfield had stolen.

They had come with rifles.

And they had come to testify.
