HE LEFT HER AT THE ALTAR FOR HER SISTER—UNAWARE SHE WAS THE DON’S ONLY BIOLOGICAL DAUGHTER
Chapter 9
Victor didn’t defend himself.
He could have.
He could have used money.
Lawyers.
Connections.
Power.
Instead, he handed the evidence to federal investigators.
Elena watched him do it.
“You know what happens now.”
“Yes.”
“You could lose everything.”
“Yes.”
“Your empire.”
“Yes.”
“Your freedom.”
Victor looked at her.
“I’ve already spent thirty years losing things.”
He paused.
“I won’t lose you by lying.”
Elena didn’t know what to say.
The investigation began.
Federal agents raided several businesses connected to Victor.
Accounts were frozen.
Associates were arrested.
Robert disappeared.
Richard was detained.
Thomas surrendered voluntarily.
Daniel testified.
Sofia testified.
For the first time, the truth was no longer hidden.
But Robert remained free.
Three weeks passed.
Then Elena received a letter.
No return address.
Inside was a photograph of her mother.
On the back:
Come to the place where it began.
Elena recognized the location.
The old hospital.
The same hospital where she had been born.
She showed Victor.
His expression changed.
“It’s a trap.”
“I know.”
“You’re not going.”
“I am.”
Victor shook his head.
“I won’t let you.”
Elena looked at him.
“Then come with me.”
They arrived at the hospital at midnight.
The building had been abandoned for years.
Inside, the halls smelled of dust.
They found the maternity ward.
Room 217.
Elena’s birthplace.
On the wall was an old photograph.
Her mother.
Holding baby Elena.
Victor stared.
“I’ve never seen this.”
Elena touched the photograph.
There was writing beneath it.
She survived.
Victor froze.
“What?”
Elena looked at him.
“Who survived?”
A voice came from the darkness.
“Your mother.”
Robert stepped forward.
He looked exhausted.
But he was smiling.
Elena’s heart stopped.
“My mother is alive?”
Robert nodded.
“She never died.”
Victor raised his weapon.
Robert laughed.
“You still don’t understand.”
He explained that Isabella had survived the cancer longer than everyone believed.
She had disappeared intentionally.
She had been hiding from both Victor and Robert.
She knew the truth would destroy both men.
She had left behind evidence.
But before she could reveal everything, she vanished again.
Robert claimed to know where she was.
Elena stepped forward.
“Tell me.”
Robert smiled.
“First, your father gives me the files.”
Victor didn’t move.
Robert pointed toward Elena.
“Or she dies.”
Victor lowered his weapon.
“Take the files.”
Elena stared at him.
“Dad.”
Victor shook his head.
“She’s more important.”
Robert grabbed the documents.
Then he revealed one final truth.
“Your mother isn’t the only person alive who knows the truth.”
Elena frowned.
“Who else?”
Robert smiled.
“Sofia.”
Elena turned.
Her sister was standing behind them.
Sofia looked terrified.
Robert had brought her.
She whispered:
“I’m sorry.”
Robert forced her forward.
“She found your mother’s location.”
Elena stared.
“Where?”
Sofia began crying.
“She made me promise not to tell anyone.”
“Where is she?”
Sofia finally whispered:
“Portugal.”
Victor immediately understood.
Isabella had always dreamed of Portugal.
She had talked about it when Elena was young.
A small coastal village.
A quiet house.
A life away from everything.
Elena’s heart raced.
Her mother could still be alive.
Robert suddenly raised his gun.
Victor stepped in front of Elena.
A shot rang out.
Thomas appeared from behind the doorway.
He fired first.
Robert dropped his weapon.
Federal agents rushed inside.
Robert was arrested.
The conspiracy finally collapsed.
But Elena wasn’t thinking about Robert.
She was thinking about one thing.
Her mother might still be alive.
