The flight to Portugal was arranged within hours.
Victor wanted to come.
Elena insisted.
Daniel asked to join them.

“I need to do this with my family.”
Daniel nodded.
“I understand.”
Before leaving, Elena visited Sofia.
Her sister was staying in a secure location.
“You saved me,” Elena said.
Sofia looked down.
“I hurt you.”
“You did.”
“I don’t deserve forgiveness.”
“Maybe not yet.”
Sofia cried.
“But I don’t hate you.”
That was enough.
Elena left.
The Portuguese village was smaller than she expected.
White houses.
Narrow streets.
The sound of the ocean.
They found the address Sofia had given them.
A small blue house overlooking the sea.
Elena knocked.

She knocked again.
The door opened.
An elderly woman stood there.
Her hair was gray.

“Mom?”
The woman dropped the bowl in her hands.
“Elena.”
They stared at each other.
Then Isabella began crying.
Elena ran into her arms.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Victor remained outside.
He couldn’t bring himself to enter.
Isabella eventually saw him.

“Victor.”
He nodded.
“Isabella.”
“You found her.”
“Yes.”
“You promised you wouldn’t.”
“I stopped making promises years ago.”
Isabella looked at Elena.
“She deserves the truth.”
Victor entered.
The three of them sat together.
Isabella explained everything.
She had survived the cancer diagnosis.
She knew Robert wanted her dead.
So she disappeared.
She had left Elena with trusted relatives.
She watched her daughter from a distance.
She knew Victor was searching.
But she was afraid that returning would put Elena in danger.
Elena cried.
“You could have told me.”
“I wanted to.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because I was afraid.”
Elena looked at Victor.
Then her mother.

“I forgive you.”
Isabella cried harder.
Victor looked away.
Elena took his hand.
“You too.”
Victor looked at her.
“For what?”

He shook his head.
“I don’t deserve forgiveness for everything.”
“No.”
Elena smiled sadly.
“But you deserve a chance to become the father I never had.”
Victor nodded.
“I’ll take it.”
They spent three days together.
Then Isabella returned with them.
The world reacted immediately.
News outlets reported that Victor Moretti’s supposedly dead former partner had been found alive.
The investigation exploded.
Robert’s network was exposed completely.
Richard confessed.
Several officials resigned.
Companies collapsed.
But Victor did something unexpected.
He announced he was stepping away from his criminal operations.
He transferred legal businesses to a new foundation.
The money was used to support families harmed by the network.
Elena became the foundation’s director.
She didn’t want the empire.
She wanted something better.
Daniel eventually came to see her.
He stood outside the foundation office.
“I know I don’t deserve another chance.”
Elena looked at him.
“No.”
He nodded.
“I understand.”

Daniel looked surprised.
“How?”

“I will.”
