He Humiliated Her and Threw Her Out — Then the New Billionaire CEO Proposed in Front of Everyone
Chapter 4
Emma’s first week was overwhelming.
She had no time to process what had happened.
One day she had been unemployed.
The next, she was sitting beside Daniel Sterling.
She attended executive meetings.
Reviewed contracts.
Observed operations.
Interacted with the board.
But Daniel gave her one rule.
“Never agree with me automatically.”
Emma smiled.
“I won’t.”
“Good.”
She began auditing internal systems.
Her instincts were excellent.
She saw problems quickly.
Supplier contracts.
Payroll inconsistencies.
Project delays.
Poor communication between departments.
Daniel listened.
Sometimes he disagreed.
Then he tested the evidence.
If Emma was wrong, he explained why.
If she was right, he acted.
Their working relationship became strong.
Then something unexpected happened.
Emma and Daniel began talking outside work.
Not intentionally.
It started with late nights.
Then coffee.
Then dinner after a board meeting.
One evening, Daniel asked:
“Why didn’t you tell me you were struggling financially?”
Emma stared.
“What?”
“Your file says you were supporting your mother.”
She became uncomfortable.
“I didn’t think it mattered.”
“It matters.”
“I don’t need pity.”
“I’m not offering pity.”
“What are you offering?”
“Respect.”
She looked at him.
He was serious.
Emma smiled.
“That’s new.”
“For you?”
“For me.”
They sat in silence.
Then she told him about her childhood.
Growing up with little money.
Her mother working two jobs.
Her younger brother.
The years she spent believing stability mattered more than happiness.
Daniel listened.
Then told her about his own childhood.
Wealth.
Pressure.
A father who valued results.
A mother who died young.
Daniel had built an empire to prove himself.
Emma was surprised.
“You don’t seem lonely.”
He smiled.
“I’ve become very good at hiding it.”
She understood.
They were more alike than either had expected.
But they kept things professional.
Daniel refused to cross the line.
Not while Emma worked directly for him.
Then the board changed the structure.
Emma’s role became independent.
She now reported to the board as well as Daniel.
That removed some of the conflict.
Still, neither acted.
Until one night, Daniel found Emma asleep in the office.
Her head was on a folder.
He smiled.
“You work too much.”
She woke.
“What time is it?”
“Midnight.”
She sat up.
“I have to finish this.”
“No.”
“I promised.”
“You promised to do good work.”
“I am.”
“Not if you’re exhausted.”
She looked at him.
“You sound like my mother.”
“Was she right?”
“Usually.”
He smiled.
Then said:
“Go home.”
Emma stood.
She looked at him.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“Believing me.”
He became quiet.
“You’re welcome.”
She left.
Daniel watched the door close.
He realized something.
He wasn’t just impressed by Emma.
He was falling for her.
And that was dangerous.
