The following Monday, Westbridge Holdings held a mandatory executive meeting.
Richard Blake arrived smiling.
He had heard that the new owner would be introduced.
He expected an older investor.
Maybe an overseas fund.
Someone distant.
Someone he could impress.
Instead, the conference room doors opened.
Daniel Sterling walked in.
The room went silent.
Everyone knew his name.
His companies.
His reputation.
His wealth.
Richard stood.
“Mr. Sterling.”
Daniel nodded.
“Richard.”
Richard smiled.
“I’m honored to have you.”
Daniel sat.
“Let’s skip the welcome speech.”
Richard’s smile faded.
Daniel placed a folder on the table.
“How long have you been changing employee records?”
Silence.
Richard’s face hardened.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
Daniel opened the folder.
“Four client presentations.”
“Three accounting discrepancies.”
“Twenty-three buried complaints.”
“Five employees fired after reporting concerns.”
Richard stared.
“I think there has been a misunderstanding.”
Daniel looked at the legal counsel.
“Play the recording.”
A voice filled the room.
Richard’s voice.
Discussing changes to the client presentation.
Then another recording.
Richard telling an assistant to blame Emma Carter.
The room became still.
Richard turned pale.
“Where did you get that?”
Daniel smiled.
“You should ask better questions.”
Richard stood.
“This is outrageous.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at him.
“This is documented.”
Richard’s confidence disappeared.
He began blaming employees.
Then systems.
Then other executives.
Daniel stopped him.
“Sit down.”
Richard sat.
Daniel turned to the board.
“Effective immediately, Richard Blake is suspended pending investigation.”
Richard stared.
“You can’t do this.”
“I already did.”
“You’ll regret it.”
Daniel smiled.
“No.”
Then he added:
“You will.”
The meeting ended.
Daniel left.
His assistant followed.
“Do you want him removed from the building?”
“Yes.”
“Immediately?”
“Immediately.”
Then Daniel looked at the executive floor.
“Where is Emma Carter?”
“She hasn’t returned.”
“Good.”
He paused.
“Don’t tell her about Richard yet.”
“Why?”
“Because I want to make her an offer first.”
That evening, Daniel called Emma.
She didn’t recognize the number.
“Hello?”
“Emma?”
“Yes.”
“It’s Daniel.”
“The investor?”
“Yes.”
There was silence.
“I have a position for you.”
Emma laughed.
“After what happened?”
“Not at Westbridge.”
She became cautious.
“What position?”
“Chief of staff.”
She nearly dropped the phone.
“For whom?”
“Me.”
She laughed.
“I’m not qualified.”
Daniel smiled.
“You identified a multimillion-dollar fraud with a spreadsheet.”
“That doesn’t make me a chief of staff.”
“It makes you someone I trust.”
Emma didn’t know what to say.
“Why me?”
“Because you tell the truth when there’s nothing in it for you.”
She was quiet.
Then asked:
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“What if I fail?”
“I’ll help you.”
“What if I disagree with you?”
“I expect you to.”
She laughed.
“That’s unusual.”
“I know.”
Emma thought about it.
Then accepted.
The next morning, Daniel introduced her to the executive team.
Some recognized her immediately.
Others looked shocked.
The same woman they had watched leave with a cardboard box was now standing beside the new billionaire CEO.
Daniel looked around the room.
“This is Emma Carter.”
“She will be my chief of staff.”
“No decision involving her previous termination is to be discussed without legal oversight.”
“Any retaliation will result in immediate dismissal.”
Richard was gone.
The executives understood.
Emma stood beside Daniel.
For the first time since being humiliated, she felt something unfamiliar.
Not revenge.
Security.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Ready?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“Good.”
Then he opened the meeting.
