He Had $17, One Broken Guitar, and Nowhere to Sleep — Then America’s Biggest Band Called His Name

CHAPTER 13

The concert became legendary.

But Ethan didn’t return to The Midnight Sons.

He didn’t need to.

He created his own label.

A small one.

Its purpose was simple:

Give unknown musicians the opportunity his father never had.

Maya became its creative director.

Daniel taught young guitarists.

Samuel recorded one final album.

It sold millions.

But he refused to tour.

“I’ve already spent enough of my life chasing stages,” he said.

Ethan laughed.

“Then what do you want?”

“Breakfast with my son.”

So they had breakfast.

Every Sunday.

For the first time in Ethan’s life, his father was simply his father.

Not a legend.

Not a mystery.

Not a ghost.

Just a man who had missed too much time.

One evening, Ethan found Samuel sitting on the porch.

“You happy?”

Samuel thought for a moment.

“Yes.”

“That’s all?”

“That’s everything.”

Ethan smiled.

Then Samuel asked:

“Are you?”

Ethan looked toward the house.

Maya was inside.

Music played softly through the window.

“I think I am.”

Samuel nodded.

“Good.”

He looked at his son’s guitar.

“Then you finally understood the song.”

“What song?”

“The one I couldn’t finish.”

Ethan smiled.

“I thought we finished it.”

Samuel shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed toward the house.

“You did.”
