He Came to Redstone to Forget His Past — Then a Dying Sheriff Whispered His Father’s Name
CHAPTER 6
Caleb couldn’t leave Redstone.
Samuel was injured.
The Black Spurs were still active.
And Pike was moving faster.
So Doc went instead.
He returned three days later.
Alone.
“What happened?”
Doc looked exhausted.
“Your father is dead.”
Caleb froze.
“He died recently.”
“How?”
“Heart.”
“Did he leave anything?”
Doc handed him a letter.
“He left this for you.”
Caleb opened it.
My son,
If Doc brought this, then I am gone.
I failed to stop Pike.
But I didn’t fail to protect you.
The ledger is under the old church.
Don’t trust the badge.
Caleb stared at the final line.
Don’t trust the badge.
He looked toward Samuel.
The marshal.
His cousin.
Samuel saw his expression.
“What?”
Caleb said nothing.
Then the courthouse door opened.
Two deputies walked in.
Both wore the Black Spurs’ symbol beneath their coats.
Samuel drew.
The deputies fired.
One bullet struck him.
Caleb returned fire.
The deputies fled.
Samuel fell.
Caleb caught him.
“You’re going to be fine.”
Samuel coughed.
“Don’t.”
“What?”
“Don’t trust me.”
Caleb froze.
Samuel whispered:
“I’ve been working for Pike.”
