He Came Asking for a Job — But the Wealthy Widow Whispered, “What I Really Need Is a Husband”
Chapter 13
At sixty, Charlotte retired from daily leadership.
Ethan had already stepped back from his company.
They moved to a quieter home outside the city.
The mansion remained for family gatherings.
But they preferred the smaller house.
There was a garden.
A porch.
A lake nearby.
Children visited.
Grandchildren eventually arrived.
Amelia became a pediatrician.
Lily studied business.
Grace ran her clinic.
The family stayed close.
One evening, Charlotte found Ethan looking through the old marriage contract.
She laughed.
“Still reading that?”
“It has sentimental value.”
“It was a terrible idea.”
He looked at her.
“The best terrible idea I ever had.”
She sat beside him.
“Do you remember our first day?”
“Forty-seven dollars.”
“You’re still counting.”
“Of course.”
She smiled.
“What would you tell that man now?”
“Don’t worry.”
“Why?”
“He’s going to be okay.”
She touched his hand.
“And what would you tell the woman?”
“Stop pretending you need a husband.”
Charlotte laughed.
“Why?”
“Because what you really needed was someone who would stay.”
She looked at him.
“And you did.”
“Yes.”
She kissed him.
The sun was setting.
The house was quiet.
For once, neither had anywhere to be.
That was one of the luxuries they valued most.
Time.
Not money.
