He Came Asking for a Job — But the Wealthy Widow Whispered, “What I Really Need Is a Husband”
Chapter 9
Two years later, Charlotte became pregnant.
Ethan was terrified.
Not of the baby.
Of everything changing.
“You’ve gone quiet,” Charlotte said.
“I’ll be a father.”
“You already are.”
“Different.”
She smiled.
“Yes.”
Amelia was excited.
She wanted a little sister.
The pregnancy forced Charlotte to slow down.
Doctors ordered rest.
She hated it.
Ethan became strict.
“No meetings after eight.”
“I can handle it.”
“No.”
She glared.
“Who made you boss?”
“You married me.”
She laughed.
“Temporary husband.”
He stared.
“Careful.”
They joked about the old contract.
It had become a family story.
Their daughter was born healthy.
They named her Lily.
Amelia cried when she met her.
“She’s tiny.”
Ethan smiled.
“Yes.”
Charlotte held the baby.
She looked at Ethan.
“I never thought we’d get here.”
“Neither did I.”
The family changed.
There were sleepless nights.
School runs.
Business trips.
Doctor visits.
Baby bottles.
Normal chaos.
Charlotte loved it.
The mansion became noisy.
Warm.
Alive.
One evening, Ethan found her sleeping on the couch with Lily on her chest.
He smiled.
He covered them with a blanket.
He remembered the woman who once sat in a silent office and asked for a temporary husband.
He couldn’t imagine that version of her anymore.
She had changed.
So had he.
