CEO Handed a Single Dad a Wedding Invitation—Then Whispered, “You’re the Groom”

Chapter 10

Robert disappeared before we could confront him.

His office was empty.

His house was empty.

His accounts were frozen.

But his files remained.

We found a hidden server beneath his law office.

It contained twenty years of records.

Payments.

Contracts.

Messages.

Most importantly, instructions to Richard and Andrew.

Robert had been controlling them.

He had created shell corporations.

Used family trusts.

Manipulated board votes.

And secretly acquired land.

The objective was simple.

Own the development rights.

Then force the Sterling family to sell.

The Eastwood land was worth billions.

The company was merely the tool.

Victoria stared at the documents.

“My father fought him.”

“Yes.”

“My mother too.”

“Yes.”

“And your father.”

“Yes.”

“That’s why they died.”

We didn’t know whether Robert had personally ordered their deaths.

But the evidence was moving in that direction.

Then we found something even worse.

A file labeled:

Daniel Hayes — Contingency.

I opened it.

Every detail of my life was there.

My job.

My daughter’s school.

My mother’s address.

My father’s old accounts.

Everything.

Then one sentence:

He is the ideal legal spouse.

I stared.

Victoria went pale.

“They chose you.”

“What?”

Robert had been monitoring me for years.

He knew I was connected to the old investigation.

He knew I had no financial conflicts.

He knew Victoria would trust me.

The marriage had been manipulated.

Not because they wanted me to help Victoria.

Because they wanted me to become the legal vehicle for transferring control.

I looked at Victoria.

“Did you know?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Then why were you the one who came to me?”

“I thought I was choosing you.”

Silence.

She began to cry.

“I didn’t know they had already chosen you.”

I took her hand.

“You didn’t know.”

“I feel like everything I do belongs to someone else’s plan.”

I held her.

“You chose me when you didn’t have to.”

She looked at me.

“How do you know?”

“Because you gave me the option to walk away.”

Her tears continued.

“That wasn’t in Robert’s plan.”

“No.”

I lifted her chin.

“That was you.”

She kissed me.

Then the security alarm sounded.

Someone was inside the estate.

We found a broken window.

No one had entered.

But one thing was missing.

The original trust.

And there was only one person who could have taken it.

Richard.

We traced his car.

It was heading toward Eastwood.

The old unfinished development.

We followed.

Inside the abandoned building, Richard was waiting.

He held the trust documents.

“You should have stayed out of this.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“You killed our parents.”

Richard shook his head.

“I didn’t.”

“Then who did?”

He looked at Robert’s files.

“You still don’t understand.”

I asked,

“Then explain.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“Robert started everything.”

“Why?”

“Because your fathers were going to expose him.”

“Then why did you help him?”

“Because he threatened my family.”

He looked at Victoria.

“He threatened you too.”

Silence.

Then Richard said something that changed everything.

“Robert didn’t just manipulate your father’s death.”

He looked at me.

“He was responsible for your mother’s disappearance too.”

My mother was alive.

At least, he believed she was.

And Robert knew where she was.
