CEO Handed a Single Dad a Wedding Invitation—Then Whispered, “You’re the Groom”
Chapter 11
We found my mother in a private care facility three hours away.
She had been living under another name.
She was alive.
And terrified.
When I saw her, I couldn’t speak.
She cried.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because Robert said he’d hurt you.”
Victoria stood quietly beside me.
My mother looked at her.
“Your father tried to stop him.”
“Why didn’t anyone expose him?”
“Because he controlled the evidence.”
She explained everything.
My father and Victoria’s father had discovered Robert was using the family trust to buy land secretly.
They planned to expose him.
Robert retaliated.
He framed both men.
He manipulated their estates.
He threatened the families.
Then he arranged for my mother to disappear.
For years, she lived under protection.
She had been the final witness.
I asked,
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
She looked at Victoria.
“Because your father left instructions.”
“What instructions?”
“Find the right person.”
I knew.
Victoria.
My mother took her hand.
“He said if you ever met Victoria, trust her.”
Victoria started crying.
“My father said the same.”
For the first time, the entire story made sense.
Our parents had not planned a marriage.
They had planned a partnership.
They wanted their children to find the truth together.
The wedding had been the trigger because Victoria’s uncle had activated the succession clause.
But Robert had manipulated even that.
He wanted me as the legal spouse because it gave him access to the trust.
Now we had enough evidence to stop him.
But Robert was still free.
And he had one move left.
The company board received an emergency filing.
Victoria was declared temporarily incapacitated because of the medication incident.
The filing claimed she was medically unstable.
I was named temporary voting holder.
I looked at the document.
“This is the trap.”
Michael nodded.
“They want you to accept control.”
“Then they’ll challenge every decision I make.”
“And blame you.”
Victoria looked at me.
“What will you do?”
I thought about it.
Then said,
“Accept.”
Everyone stared.
Victoria shook her head.
“No.”
“It’s the only way to get them to reveal themselves.”
“They could destroy you.”
“They could.”
She grabbed my hand.
“No.”
I smiled.
“Trust me.”
She looked at me.
“I do.”
I accepted the temporary role.
The board meeting was held the next day.
I entered the room alone.
The directors expected an inexperienced single father.
Someone easy to manipulate.
Instead, I placed the original evidence on the table.
“I know about Robert.”
Silence.
Richard entered.
Andrew entered.
Then Robert.
He smiled.
“You finally understand.”
I looked at him.
“You chose me.”
“Yes.”
“You used Victoria.”
“Yes.”
“You used our parents.”
“They were obstacles.”
I felt anger.
But I stayed calm.
Robert continued.
“You think you’re different.”
“No.”
“I think I’m exactly what you underestimated.”
He laughed.
Then security entered.
But they weren’t mine.
They were Robert’s.
He had locked the building.
“You’re going to sign over control.”
“No.”
“Then your daughter disappears.”
I stared at him.
“You wouldn’t.”
He smiled.
“You still don’t understand.”
Then a voice came from the doorway.
“I do.”
Victoria.
She walked in.
Not alone.
Federal investigators stood behind her.
Robert’s smile vanished.
Victoria had recorded everything.
Richard looked terrified.
Andrew surrendered immediately.
Robert ran.
He didn’t make it far.
The building was surrounded.
For the first time, the Sterling family had evidence Robert couldn’t erase.
