At Her Sister’s Wedding, My Best Friend Caught the Bouquet… Then Walked Straight to My Table!
Chapter 12
Six months later, Emily and Sophie moved into the old Lane house.
They restored the study.
Preserved the photographs.
And kept the hidden box exactly where they found it.
Not because they were afraid of the past.
Because they wanted to remember how far they had come.
Claire stayed nearby with Daniel.
Their marriage survived the truth.
Daniel had testified against his father.
He had also walked away from the Hale family fortune.
He and Claire started over.
Ben became part of their circle.
Robert apologized.
He spent the rest of his life helping families affected by workplace accidents.
And the foundation grew.
But one afternoon, Emily found another letter.
It had been hidden behind the original photograph.
Her mother’s handwriting.
Emily opened it with shaking hands.
My dear Emily,
If you found this, then the truth is finally safe.
Emily smiled through tears.
The letter continued:
I know you may wonder why Sophie was always so important to you.
Emily looked at Sophie.
She was outside in the garden.
Because our families were never supposed to be enemies.
We were trying to protect our children.
And I knew one day you would need someone who would never leave.
Emily stopped.
Her eyes filled.
The final line said:
Trust the girl who always walks back to your table.
Emily laughed softly.
Sophie came inside.
“What?”
Emily handed her the letter.
Sophie read it.
Then smiled.
“Your mother knew.”
“She knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That I’d love you.”
Sophie laughed.
“That is slightly terrifying.”
Emily hugged her.
Then something fell from the envelope.
A small photograph.
It showed Emily and Sophie as teenagers.
The back read:
Someday, they will understand.
Emily looked at it.
“We were seventeen.”
“Yes.”
“You were already in love with me.”
Sophie smiled.
“I told you.”
Emily kissed her.
“I wish you’d told me sooner.”
“I was terrified.”
“I know.”
Sophie held her.
“Would you have believed me?”
Emily thought about it.
“Maybe not.”
“Exactly.”
They laughed.
Outside, Claire shouted:
“Dinner!”
Emily looked at Sophie.
“Coming?”
“In a minute.”
They stayed there quietly.
The old house felt warm again.
Not haunted.
Not secretive.
Just full of memories.
Then Sophie looked at Emily.
“Do you ever wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t caught that bouquet?”
Emily smiled.
“I do.”
“What do you think?”
Emily kissed her forehead.
“I think you would have found another way.”
Sophie laughed.
“Probably.”
